Have a nice day!

Someone once asked me whether it is appropriate to text the sentence ‘have a nice day’ to another person. I considered it so. You see, there doesn’t seem to be another phrase that can actually replace ‘have a nice day’ unless of course you consider ‘have a great day’. I mean, why can’t we have a nice day, anyway? I don’t harbour any ill feelings towards ‘have a nice day’ but a teacher once said that the word nice is ambiguous. Ditto goes for bad and good. It is like how nice/bad/good is the party/weather, etc. Of course, if we were to write an essay (especially a descriptive one); it is best to avoid ambiguous words at all cost. But it could be another kettle of fish as if you are going to greet someone ‘Good morning’, don’t you think? Everyone understands exactly what you mean by that and there is definitely no ambiguity here. All in all, just have a nice day!
